5 Simple Optimal Keyword Sets
The above sales funnel begins with keywords, so as you may imagine, these are the building blocks of the potential success for your online campaign. Let's look at a five step process for finding and keeping your best keyword sets.
Step 1) Create Keyword List: To do this you need to begin by asking yourself what you think people will type into Google when they want what you have. Secondly, you can ask around to friends and family to find out what terms they may use to find your product or service. Lastly, check out the Google Keyword Tool. The way this free tool works is that you input a search term, phrase or website and it will generate a list of keywords that are associated with that value. Then browse through all of the keywords that it creates and pick out the ones that are relevant to your set. By taking all of these steps, you will have created a pretty health group of keywords for your campaign.
Step 2) Organize Keyword Groups: Many of the tricks to online ad campaigns have been the ability to subdivide your ad groups to monitor performance. The same is true here with keywords. By placing your keyword sets into a variety of groups, you will be able to clearly identify which sets of keywords need to go into the various ad campaigns.
Step 3) Apply the Match Types to Keywords: In the previous lesson '5 Keyword Targeting Techniques'
we discussed the different ways that you can target your keywords for the best results. Go through your keyword sets and decide which keywords need to be targeted in this manner.
Step 4) Eliminate the Trash Keywords: In this process you may determine that some of the keywords that you generated are not going to help you out in a positive way. Well don't be afraid to throw them away. Not all keywords are going to help you out, so trashing the ones that you know are useless is a good idea. Don't horde your keywords. If you want to do a quick test to get an idea of whether or not a keyword is helpful, simply type it into Google and see the results. Are there other businesses, services or articles that are related to yours? If so, then you may want to keep it. If it just pulls up a bunch of irrelevant information then throw it out.
Step 5) Test and Refine: You should have a pretty good start with all of your keywords at this point. Now is the time to put them to the test. Let them run for about a month so that they have a chance to show some results and then come back and monitor the performance. If some keywords are burning up clicks without showing any positive results then you may want to eliminate or re-target these words. Likewise, you will now have some data of the words that are driving the quality traffic you want.
